The Story Character Profiles (SCPs) replaced the ‘Character Bios’ we used earlier (when the project was called Valyr™). This page serves as the index pointing to each character’s SCP and it’s narrative story. Major Valyr characters are alphabetically listed by Surname then by Given name. This causes those characters with blank surnames to float to the top.
WARNINGS
- This document leads to spoiler information. If you don’t want the story (like a narrative) to be spoiled, stay away from all the SCP links in the following table!
- BEFORE you create a story character profile (SCP) page for any character, please be sure to add missing surnames! A character’s surname must be part of the title and will (normally) become part of the alias automatically.
The Bio or Story Character Profile (SCP)
A Bio is the brief biography of the character. This is the authoritative source from which to write a story that includes the character. Nothing major is left out or kept secret here. The major advantage in using the SCP is that documentation like this allows multiple authors/editors working on a large project to collaborate using common information. The website information helps us all track the places, events and people in the stories we are writing. It’s the who, where and when. To help with the who, the SCPs inform all of us about each character that may have a part in our individual writings.
Each Bio from the original Character Bios page is being transferred & converted into story character profile (SCP) pages linked from this table. The following table cross-references Player Character & NPC names to the editor/game player, it’s SCP and any narrative if completed. If you have not started your SCP yet, here’s a prepared example you can copy to begin with.
About Character Narratives
A Narrative is a story that has one character as it’s ‘lead’ There should be lots of secrets/unknowns that are given out sparingly as the narrative progresses. Here are some tips for writing an interesting narrative:
- Before you begin writing your narrative. Please give serious consideration to writing a SCP on each major character appearing in your Narrative. This does not mean you need to create one for each being present, just the ones that are going to get more than a brief mention in the story. If you are really blessed you will find most of the character SCP’s already filled in. The SCP is used to build substance, dimension and believability. We are not asking that you use all of these details in your story, but the subtleties of the character tend to come through because they are more “real” for you as you write them into a story.
- Spice things up by writing in dialog that “shows” the reader the depth and substance of each person. Try to avoid the stereo-types, overly contrived, the flat and simple. To the reader they may appear sort of like cartoons vs. real people.
- Consider giving titles to each chapter to raise interest.
- Instead of “telling” the reader all the details of what’s happening and what someone’s thinking, try writing in scenes where the reader can observe what’s happening and “sees” it unfold for them self. Filling in all the blanks for the reader may cause them to feel like you’re condescending, as if they’re too stupid to make their own conclusions about what’s happening.
